So last night was the premiere of the new Office-esque series Parks & Recreation, starring Amy Poehler, Aziz Ansari and Rashida Jones, and it was pretty great. Sue me, but I actually enjoyed the Rainn Wilson comedy The Rocker. It was a little mediocre in spots, like when Wilson gets naked (because that's what he does) or gets hit in the nuts, but otherwise it's an entertaining movie. Will Arnett and Fred Armisen as Cleveland rockers gone British are fantastic. So why did the whole thing feel familiar? Because it was the same kind of cheesy, "we-can-do-it" rock 'n' roll flick as one of my favorite guilty-pleasure movies: Josie and the Pussycats. When The Office first came on the air in America, I refused to watch it. I had seen a little bit of the original British series, and I was put off by the show's brand of embarrassment humor. I already felt uncomfortable most of the time, so why watch a show that made me more uncomfortable? I eventually grew to love the U.S. series, despite the frequent embarrassing situations, and today I can even rattle off the most embarrassing moments for each of the Dunder-Mifflin staffers.
